More Babies Are Sleeping Safely

Skaggs Foundation and the Ozarks Health Advocacy Foundation recently implemented a Safe Sleep Initiative for Taney and Stone County families. Funding was used to provide a safe place for infants to sleep, regardless of family circumstances. In our area, those with multiple young children in one household, families sharing a single residence and those living at extended stay motels frequently do not have proper cribs for their infants. When babies share a bed with adults or other children, their risk of injury, overheating, suffocation, strangulation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) increases significantly.

“Babies can sleep up to 16 hours every day,” explains Heather Zoromski, Grants Administrator for Skaggs Foundation, “so it’s important they sleep in a safe environment. The very safest place for a baby to sleep is alone.”

With grant funding secured by Skaggs Foundation, the non-profit purchased and distributed 43 portable playards – safety-approved cribs with firm, tight-fitting mattresses. Community partners including Cox Medical Center Branson, Jesus Was Homeless, Taney County Health Department, Pregnancy Life Line, Lakes Area Child Advocacy Center, UMC Lifesong, and Branson Parents as Teachers helped distribute the cribs to families in need. Twelve more playards are available for families who qualify and when those are distributed, Pregnancy Life Line has additional funding from Ozarks Health Advocacy Foundation to continue this life-saving program for their clients in our region.

Tim Nichols, Skaggs Foundation President believes our community has a responsibility to look out for its youngest and most vulnerable members. “We have a number of programs to help assure the health and wellness of infants and children in Stone and Taney counties. With the help of our contributors and cooperating organizations, we will continue to make our children a top priority.”
